This story takes a very innocent expression of childhood- literal thinking- and shatters it with the ugly reality of intolerance.
Two children learn of a drinking fountain that offers “colored” water. They imagine this to be a wonderful thing and simply must go taste it for themselves. Sadly, they are frightened by the police and protests.
Faulkner gives us a beautifully illustrated example of how nonsensical segregation was. Is.
After reading this to my 11 year old he read it to a friend. Can’t think of a better recommendation.
