11/5 Relocation Update

Dear Open Classroom families,

We have an unexpected update to share (students will stay at Hawthorne for an additional week), along with good news about the status of the Open Classroom building.

Update: One More Repair Needed
During a final inspection of the plumbing system today, our team discovered a small water leak inside a pipe chase (an enclosed vertical space that houses pipes) in one of the student bathrooms. After consulting with our contractor, it was determined that additional time is needed to complete this repair.

As a result, the Open Classroom community will remain at the Hawthorne Elementary campus for an additional week. We now anticipate that Wednesday, November 12, will be our last day at Hawthorne. We plan to have an asynchronous learning day for students on Thursday, November 13, and we will resume in-person learning at the Open Classroom building on Friday, November 14.

Good News: Health Department and Division of Risk Management Findings

Out of an abundance of caution, we requested independent environmental and air quality testing from two agencies.

  • Utah Division of Risk Management: On November 4, they conducted air quality testing throughout the Open Classroom building. Their readings confirmed that the environment is safe for students and staff to return. We expect their full written report later this week and will share it once received.
  • Salt Lake County Health Department: On November 5, they completed additional testing to assess indoor air quality, measuring carbon dioxide levels, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and other particulates. Their findings were all within normal, healthy ranges. They confirmed that the building meets all applicable health and safety standards. We will share their final report once it becomes available later this week.

While our return is delayed by a few days to complete the plumbing repair, it is reassuring to know that the building has been cleared for occupancy and meets all health and safety requirements.

Thank you for your continued patience and flexibility as we complete this final step. Our priority has always been to make sure the building is safe and ready for students and staff. We look forward to welcoming everyone back to the Open Classroom on Friday, November 14.

Sincerely,

Salt Lake City School District
