School Community Council

What does the SCC do?

  • Build consistent and effective communication among community members

  • Give parents/guardians another opportunity to be actively involved in their children's education at our school.

  • Help create and evaluate the Open Classroom School Improvement Plan

  • Create our Utah State Land Trust Plan and determine how to best utilize the $54,610.88 2025-2026 SY funding. SCC works collaboratively with the Steering and Steering Exec committees to determine our community’s greatest needs.

  • Participating parents/guardians are elected by our parent body to serve two-year terms. Meetings are conducted using the Open Classroom Rules of Order and Procedure. Members review and receive training on those at the beginning of every school year.

Invitation to Serve

The role of SCC is to involve parents/guardians of students in the decision making at the school level of state and district school plans, school Land Trust program and additional issues that the state or district requests. If you are interested or have someone you think would be a great addition to the School Community Council, please contact ocsteeringchair@slcschools.org.

SCC/Steering Exec is made up of 6 elected parents, 2 teachers, and the principal. Steering Exec serves as the central point of communication for parents and school operations, as well as numerous other tasks.

The Steering Body is made up of the principal, faculty representatives, Exec, and classroom Steering Body reps (parents/guardians). The Steering Body will serve as an advisory committee to SCC/Exec and represent their classroom to vote as needed in meetings.

SCC meets on the 1st Tuesday of every month. The Steering Body meets on the 2nd Tuesday of every month. Both are public meetings and minutes can be found on our website.

Have something you want to propose at the next steering meeting?

  1. Contact a Steering Exec. member and let them know there’s something you’d like to talk about at steering.
  2. Write up a short proposal.  Include what you want to accomplish, what your reasoning is, how much it would cost, etc.
  3. Have a conversation with Steering Exec. about your proposal.  They will ask questions, make suggestions, put you in touch with other interested people.
  4. When everyone thinks the proposal is fleshed out enough to go to steering, ask to be put on the agenda. Send a copy of your proposal to the steering email group.
  5. Attend the meeting and answer questions, consider other options with the group.
  6. After discussion, your proposal may be a decision item on the agenda, often the next month. Come to the meeting, briefly remind steering of the proposal, answer any more questions, and then it can be voted on when the Steering group is ready.
