Asynchronous Learning & Temporary Emergency Relocation

Dear Open Classroom families and community,

We want to inform you that tomorrow (Wednesday, October 29) will be an asynchronous learning day for students due to an urgent sewage repair needed at our school. This repair will require the water to be shut off, making it necessary for us to temporarily relocate our students and staff.

Asynchronous Learning Day: October 29

Today, you will hear from your student’s teacher via ParentSquare regarding plans for asynchronous learning tomorrow. Materials will be sent home today with all students. If your student was absent today, they will be given an opportunity to make up the missed work. We will reconvene in person on October 30 at a temporary location.

Relocation to Hawthorne Elementary: starting October 30

Starting Thursday, October 30, 2025, all Open Classroom students and teachers will be housed at Hawthorne Elementary School: 1675 S. 600 E., Salt Lake City, UT. This arrangement will remain in place until Wednesday, November 6, while repairs are completed. Meals will be provided to students while they are at Hawthorne Elementary. If you need to contact our main office during the relocation, please use our current office phone number: 801-578-8144.

Hawthorne Elementary is one of the schools that closed in Salt Lake City School District at the beginning of last year. Currently, the district’s team of behavior specialists, as well as district-level staff in P.E. and Fine Arts, use office space at Hawthorne. They will continue using this space during the Open Classroom’s time in the building.

Please make sure your child takes home all of their personal belongings today, as there will be no access to the school building until at least November 6.

Pick-Up and Drop-Off

Hawthorne is located at the intersection of two busy roads. If you plan to drop your student off in a car, please enter the school property from 600 East (see the map below), drop your student off at the front, and exit the school grounds via Milton Avenue.

Preschool and Aftercare

We will continue providing our usual services for both our preschool and aftercare students during the relocation. Afterschool pickup will take place in the parking lot outside the main doors to the school on 600 East.

Halloween

We plan to move forward with our Halloween festivities, as planned. We will let you know of any substantial changes to our plans, but Friday will still be a fun, festive day for Open Classroom.

We understand this temporary change may be inconvenient, and we appreciate your flexibility and understanding as we ensure the safety and comfort of our students and staff. I will be in communication with you as we receive new information.
